Unfortunately it is fair to say in this day and age video games and television are king. Our children would rather spend hours in front of a TV playing on the latest games consoles than they would read one of the top fantasy books. For years now books have barely crossed the mind of children (and to be fair adults) when deciding on what activity to do next that day, most will jump straight in front of the TV or switch on their games console without even considering the possibility of reading a book when they have the spare time. In the past decade one fantasy author has at least bucked that trend a little, J.K. Rowling’s phenomenal Harry Potter series has seen children worldwide picking up books instead of spending countless hours in front of the TV. While it’s a start, it’s really not enough that adults and children barely read anymore compared with the other activities mentioned. Hopefully by using this website to find the top fantasy books available to you (and maybe your children), you will see an increase in your reading and a decrease in the countless wasted TV-hours.
The smallest bookstore still contains more ideas of worth than have been presented in the entire history of television – Andrew Ross
Fantasy literature as we know it today first emerged in the Victorian times with writers such as George MacDonald and William Morris. The popularisation of the genre didn’t happen until sometime later, in 1950′s England. At this time, two now world famous authors, J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis were both busy writing some of the top fantasy books ever written. J.R.R Tolkien was busy with The Lord Of The Rings – a follow up to a book he had written 13 years earlier called The Hobbit, while his good friend, C.S. Lewis, was writing another now famous book – The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. It is down to these pioneer’s of the fantasy genre and their top fantasy books that the genre is so big today, walk into any decent size bookshop and the chances are the fantasy section is one of the largest sections in the entire shop.
If we fast-forward to modern day and fantasy literature is probably more popular than ever before thanks to it’s founders and it’s modern great authors such as Rowling, Martin, Hobb, Pratchett and many more still constantly writing top fantasy books. We are also currently seeing a large amount of top fantasy books being adapted for the big screen with The Lord Of The Rings and Harry Potter being world wide hits and winning countless awards between them over the past decade. J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit is also now close to cinema release and with a second series of George R.R. Martin’s ‘Game Of Thrones’ being another TV hit it’s fair to say the fantasy genre is in a great position!

‘I find television very educating. Every time somebody turns on the set, I go into the other room and read a book’ - Groucho Marx
